FIRST 10-BIT 105Msps ADC DELIVERS 70dB NYQUIST SFDR AND LOWEST POWER

 
 

SUNNYVALE, CA-March 26, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1449, the newest and fastest addition to its family of low-power +3V, 10-bit monolithic analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) delivering lowest power with high dynamic performance at 80Msps, 60Msps, or 40Msps sampling rates. Unlike comparable high-speed 10-bit ADCs, the MAX1449 achieves a full 58dB SNR, 70dB SFDR, and -70dBc THD at 50MHz input (Nyquist) frequency while nominally consuming only 175mW.

Targeted at high-speed communication, imaging, and instrumentation applications, where wide bandwidth, good linearity, and high dynamic performance at lowest power are required, these new converters have the best power vs. performance and cost available. All four parts can be operated from a +2.7V to +3.3V analog supply, while a separate digital supply pin allows output operation from +1.7V to +3.3V providing maximum interface flexibility. The three-state output data is presented in straight offset binary format. A shutdown (sleep) mode, available on all parts, reduces power consumption to a mere 5µA during idle periods.

THD for the MAX1449 is a low -70dBc at 7.5MHz and remains flat within 1dB to 50MHz input frequencies while operating from a single +3V supply. The MAX1449 achieves this high performance with a ±1V input range through the use of an innovative differential pipelined architecture. Both differential and single-ended input configurations are supported.

An integrated, fully differential input T/H amplifier minimizes the requirement for external components while providing high dynamic performance at a low 5pF input capacitance, plus a full power bandwidth of greater than 400MHz. The MAX1449 has an on-chip precision 2.048V bandgap reference that may be overdriven with an external reference voltage. This allows users flexible input range options and automatically ensures the correct DC bias levels for AC coupled applications.

Pin-compatible, lower sampling rate versions (MAX1448:80Msps/120mW, MAX1446:60Msps/90mW, and MAX1444:40Msps/60mW) supply the same excellent performance specifications for applications requiring less speed.

The MAX1449 comes packaged in a space-saving 32-pin TQFP package specified for the industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). It is priced at $10.70 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit, including the MAX1449 device, is available for $119.50.
