LOWEST-POWER +3.0V, 10-BIT, 80Msps ADC DELIVERS 70dB SFDR AT NYQUIST

 
 

SUNNYVALE, CA—July 10, 2000—Maxim Integrated Products introduces a new family of low-power +3.0V, 10-bit monolithic analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) capable of digitizing wide-bandwidth inputs to 80Msps (MAX1448), 60Msps (MAX1446), and 40Msps (MAX1444). Unlike other high-speed 10-bit ADCs, the MAX1448 achieves a full 58.5dB SNR and -73dBC SFDR at 40MHz input (Nyquist) frequency while consuming only 120mW of power.

These new converters are targeted at high-speed communication, imaging, and instrumentation applications requiring wide bandwidth, good linearity, and high dynamic performance at the lowest power. These devices have the best power, performance, and cost, and can be operated from a +2.7V to +3.3V analog supply. A separate digital supply pin allows output operation from 1.7V to 3.3V, providing maximum interface flexibility. Three-state output data is presented in straight offset binary format.

THD for the MAX1448 is a low -72dBC at 7.5MHz. Third-harmonic distortion (HD3) is a low -74dBC, and remains flat within 1dB to 40MHz input frequencies while operating from a single +3.0V supply. The MAX1448 achieves this high performance with a ±1V input with an innovative differential pipelined architecture. Both differential and single-ended input configurations are supported.

An integrated, fully differential input T/H amplifier minimizes the requirement for external components and provides high dynamic performance at low 5pF input capacitance, plus full-power bandwidth of greater than 400MHz. The MAX1448 has an on-chip precision 2V bandgap reference that can be overdriven with an external reference voltage. This allows flexible input range options and automatically ensures the correct DC bias levels for AC-coupled applications.

Pin-compatible, lower-sampling-rate versions (MAX1446: 60Msps 90mW and MAX1444: 40Msps, 66mW) are available with the same excellent specifications for lower-speed applications. A shutdown mode is available that reduces power consumption to 5µA during idle periods.

The MAX1448 comes in a space-saving 32-pin TQFP package specified for the industrial (-40°C to +85°C) temperature range. It is priced from $8.35 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit, including the MAX1448 device, is available for $119.50.
